More Kiwi beer lovers are brewing at home than ever before and for many years, the country’s keenest amateur brewers have been able to submit their beers to home brewing competitions all over New Zealand. However home brewing doesn’t need to be a singular and lonely endeavour, it may be said that too many cooks might spoil the broth, but we reckon the more brewers the better the brew.
After a rollicking first year Beervana and Black Rock are bringing back New Zealand’s Hottest Home Brewers.
We invite teams of two to four people to test their brewing chops in the biggest brewing battle New Zealand has ever seen. While this might be a competition for groups of friends, it isn’t going to be very friendly. Teams will have not only brewed a fine ale, but be prepared to go head to head with other teams at Beervana in a battle of senses, coordination, and wits.
Get a team of between two and four people, brew this year’s style which is the sexiest style of all BROWN ALE, come up with a good name, an awesome label if you feel like it and send it to us for the Qualification round.
Friday 4th August: Qualification – Four weeks before Beervana a panel of judges will determine the eight best beers based taste. Qualifying teams will be invited to Beervana to compete in the quarter-finals. Teams will receive up to four GA tickets for the Saturday afternoon session (session 3) to attend the quarter-final. They must make their own way to Beervana and have at least two representatives from their team present. In the instance a team cannot attend Beervana, the team who have brewed the next best beer will be invited.
Saturday 12 August Beervana session 3, 11:30 am: Quarter-finals (8 teams) – PHYSICAL CHALLENGE! Four games of Flip Cup will be played in the Home Brewers Hub (with water) to determine who advances to the semifinals.
Saturday 12 August Beervana session 3, 12:30 pm: Semi-finals (4 teams) – A battle of senses and wits. Points will be taken from the two activities to determine which three teams will continue on to the final. These activities will be:
Blind Tasting – One team member must taste blindfolded and guess the correct styles of five different beers.
Beer Quiz – Teams go head to head in a battle of beer wits.
Saturday 12 August Beervana session 3, 2:30 pm: Finals (3 teams) – The final three teams’ beers will be put to a panel of judges who will determine whose beer is the most delicious and thus crowning their team New Zealand’s Hottest Home Brewers!
